The fantastic Cape Hatteras Restaurants may well bring you to this location initially, but there is also plenty to see and do...enough to ensure that you will stick around. We will also be providing background information on this historic location, and some creative family beach ideas as well. Let's get started... To start things off, here's a picture of the famous Cape Hatteras lighthouse itself.
Now, for your visual enjoyment, a spectacular view from the top of the lighthouse...looking way out into the Atlantic Ocean. Keep in mind, you will have to do a bit of work to enjoy a view like this. There are no elevators, so you will need to climb the stairs...all 255 of them. Warning signs inform you that this endeavor is not for the faint of heart, but isn't this view worth it?
The photo below shows the original site of the lighthouse. This location was 1500 feet away from the ocean back in 1870, but with beach erosion of 10-12 feet annually, this diminshed to only about 120 feet by the end of the 20th century. In order to save the lighthouse from certain destruction, the decision was made to move it about 1600 feet inland. A "crawler" device, similar to those that take the rockets in Cape Canaveral to the launchpad, achieved this amazing feat in 1999.
Keep in mind, there is also a wonderful little beach nearby. After taking in all the history of this fabulous location, it's time to enjoy a bit of sand and surf. Here you can clearly see the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse from the beach.
Since this beach is facing the ocean, the size of the surf can vary in size. Here's a picture of the surf on a beautiful day in May. When the hurricanes start to roam up from the south, these waves can grow to great heights. It's sunny today, time to enjoy the beach while we can.
If you want to have a wharf or breakwater in the ocean, you will need something durable that will survive the crushing onslaught of the waves. Metal anyone?
