What are some composing tricks you can use in your creative family beach vacation photography?

Composing your subject properly can create some wonderful creative family beach vacation photographs. Here are a few tips:

The Rule of Thirds
Remember the "rule of thirds" as you frame your subject matter in the viewfinder. Consider the following photograph of a rabbit:

rabbit

As you can see, this photo is split up into 9 separate blocks of equal size. This framing creates 4 areas, or quadrants, where red lines intersect. These quadrants are:

1) Top Left - 1/3 from the left and 1/3 from the top.
2) Top Right - 1/3 from the right and 1/3 from the top.
3) Bottom Left - 1/3 from the left and 1/3 from the bottom.
4) Bottom Right - 1/3 from the right and 1/3 from the bottom.

The subject, the rabbit in this case, is in quadrant 3. With a little bit of work, the rabbit could have easily been located in one of the other quadrants. This is the "rule of thirds" as it gives a nice framing and placement to the subject.

Lighting
When composing your photographs, be sure to be mindful of the lighting. It's best to have the sun, or lighting source, at your back and illuminating your subject from this direction. By taking your photographs in the early morning, or later in the day, you will be able to avoid the harsh shadows that are generated in the heat of the day.

Think
Before you click the shutter, think about what you are trying to say in your photograph. Try to tell a story with the subject and it's relationship with the surroundings. All greatness comes from a single thought...and such is the case in photography as well.

Click...Click...Click
With the age of digital photography upon us, you can take photograph after photograph for mere pennies...if that. No longer do you have to think about the cost of the film you might be wasting. It's better to take more pictures than less pictures as this will ensure that you don't miss that priceless "once in a lifetime" photograph. You can always click on the "delete" if you need space later on.

Keep it Handy
With digital cameras getting smaller and smaller, there is no reason not to have one with you almost all the time. Better to be ready for that great photograph than express the "woulda, shoulda, coulda's".

Employ some of these composing tricks on your next creative family beach vacation photographs.
