Before you leave for the trip
Check to see the weather at your travel destination.
Do you need a passport? Then get one.
Do you need a visa? Then get one.
Purchase your travel tickets (ie: airline, train, etc.)
Get some travel insurance.
Make your hotel reservations.
Convert some money into the local currency.
Mark all your bags with identification.

Guide books and magazines.
Travel clothing.
Sunglasses.
Hat.
Camera, film, and batteries.
Prescription medication, if any.
Motion Sickness medication.
Sunscreen.
Sunburn relief.
Iron and/or travel steamer.
A Sink Stopper for Hotel Sinks.
Electrical Converter/Adapter, if required.
Reading lamp for the airplane, train, etc.
Comb and/or Brush.
Toothbrush and Toothpaste.
Dental Floss.
Deodorant.
Make Up.
Shampoo.
Shaving Cream.
Blow Dryer.

Before you leave the house
Stop deliveries of newspapers, milk, mail, etc.
Make accomodation for your pets.
Have someone take care of your plants.
Start your timed lighting device.
Notify the local police of your absence.
Leave a house key and travel plans with a neighbor.
Empty the fridge.
Turn down the thermostat.
Turn off the water heater.
Store any valuables in a safe place.
Lock all doors and windows.
