Albert Styron's General Store
Welcome to Albert Styron's General Store, one of the oldest establishments on Ocracoke Island.
Open from mid-March to early January, it's style and contents give you a brief glimpse of what shopping in Ocracoke must have been like back at the turn of the century.

Where is it located? If you have been near the Ocracoke Lighthouse then you are very, very close.
Established at it's current location since ~1920, Albert Styron tore down his family's store on Hog Island (near Cedar Island), and moved the huge cyprus wall to Ocracoke via his boat...and the rest is history.
This store is listed on the National Register of Historic Places...giving you some idea of it's historic importance on the national scene.

The leather-bound transaction ledgers record proudly displayed in the store record varied sales transactions that go as far back in time as 1925.
Check out the antique cash register that is on display in the store. Did you know that the "former" feed scale now holds storeroom keys? While the feed scale has found a new purpose, the safe and multi-drawer rolltop desk are still being used as they have been for nearly 50 years.

Like the times, the contents being sold at this store have varied and changed throughout the years. Currently, they sell a wide variety of items, including gift items, fine wines, gourmet treats, a varied selection of teas and coffees, and of course the staple tourist item...ice cream.
Why rush off? Ocracoke is a place to "sit a spell" and enjoy the breeze of time as it rushes by. There are two wooden tables, and about a dozen wooden chairs, where you can enjoy your tasty treats and have a chat with the locals about fishing, sleeping, relaxing, and other heated topics.
Before you head out for another day of sightseeing, why not pack one of their delicious sandwiches (or two) for that mid-afternoon hunger craving?

Visit this historic landmark for some delicious treats, and a taste of Ocracoke from an era gone by...
